Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
here are chances of multiple eggs being produced during ovarian stimulation and as a result there are more embryos available for transfer to the uterus. These spare embryos can also be frozen for future use. These embryos can be used in the future by the couple without needing to spend any additional cost or go through the inconvenience of stimulation to obtain additional eggs. Such frozen embryos can be stored and used for up to ten years, depending on their quality. There are several techniques used for embryo preservation and the most common method in called “vitrification”.
Frozen Embryo Transfer takes place through the following process.
Natural cycle : Under this method, the embryo(s) are replaced when implantation is most likely to happen.
Stimulated cycle : Medications are prescribed to stop the ovaries from releasing any eggs and the womb will be prepared for the embryo transfer. Once the thickness of the endometrium reaches an appropriate level the embryo thawing process gets started.
Embryo thawing : The embryos are examined to know how well they have survived the thawing process.
Embryo transfer : Finally the embryo is transferred using a thin catheter with a syringe on the end. This transfer is similar to a smear test and it will cause minimal discomfort.
